An old friend starting in 8th grade. Clay will surely be missed by all.

Dearest Clay,
I loved you immeasurably. You were my best friend, confidente, and outside of my family, the most important person in my life. Our forty year friendship sustained me through many happy as well as many sad times. You were one of the most brilliant people I have ever known and one of the most beautiful, inside and out. The thought of never looking into your blue eyes again pierces my heart.
I hope your family finds comfort in their countless memories of you and the knowledge that you touched many, many people's lives, and we were the better for it.

Clay's family opened up their hearts and home to me in February, and our grief entertwined. We all miss you, more than you would have ever guessed.

My heart is broken. Clay, you were an inspiration, a mentor and a wonderful friend. Not a day goes by where I don't think about your kindness and laugh and warmth and affection. You will always have a very special place in my heart.

I grew up near the Vaughan family...for a period of time Mark was my best friend. I knew Clay and all of the brothers as well as Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan. They always impressed me as a large, happy family and I have fond memories of them all. I once spent Christmas Day with the family (being Jewish it was my first Christmas experience) and had a lot of fun. Clay always treated me nicely...many of my friends' older siblings did not. I was saddened to learn of his passing and wish to express my condolences to the entire family

I will miss you Clay. Thanks for all your hard work putting together the last two issues of the Powhatan Review. I'm glad I'll still be able to hear your voice when I listen to you read your poem "JB (1904-1961)" on the Powhatan Review site. Farewell my friend. Steve

It is with great sadness that I write this note to you, Clay's family. Clay meant so much to so many people in so many different ways - my contacts with Clay were few, but very memorable. He will be missed by all of us in the art community. Peace be with you.

Clay, I miss you greatly. We've known each other since I was six! We had great times in our band in high school with Greg Hanson, and Eddie Werz. We were always running into each other during our V.C.U. days. I'm glad we hooked-up for a beer at O'Sullys not so long ago. I wish you peace my friend, to your family, and to your friends everywhere.

My deepest condolences are sent from many miles away to Clay's family. I worked with Clay for 10 years at ODU Library. I will always cherish his kindness. The one thing I specifically remember about Clay is how fast he could type using only two fingers. Funny...how things like that come back to us when faced with sadness. I know that he will be missed by all but his memory will be cherished forever.
Rest in peace, my friend.

I am saddened to hear of this great loss. Although I only worked with him for a brief time, Clay was such a joy! I have lots of happy memories of visiting with him over in "his" library. He will indeed be missed by so many.
