ANGIE COX MYERS

VIRGINIA BEACH - Angie Cox Myers, 88, died peacefully at her home in Atlantic Shores on July 18, 2010. Born in Floyd, Virginia, she was the youngest of Luke and Mary Ann Gardner Cox's nine children.

Angie graduated from Floyd High School and Radford State Teachers College (now Radford University). In 1946, she earned a master's degree from Scarritt College for Christian Workers in Nashville, Tennessee. She served at Methodist settlement houses in El Paso, Texas and Nashville before becoming Director of Christian Education at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee. She held the same position at First Methodist Church in Newport News, Virginia, and at Wesley United Methodist in Vienna, Virginia. Angie was 48 when she married Vance A. Myers, a widower with two sons. After her husband's death in 1992, Angie moved to Nellysford, Virginia, with her longtime friend Nancy Dugger. After Nancy died, Angie relocated to Virginia Beach to be near family.

Angie is survived by her sister-in-law Beatrice Cox of Blacksburg, Virginia; stepsons Wayne Myers of Eugene, Oregon, and Whitney Myers and wife Sally of Rockville, Maryland; grandchildren Kristin Gomez of Germantown, Maryland, Timothy Myers of Athens, Ohio, Katherine Myers of Yorktown, Virginia, and three great-grandchildren. She leaves four nieces and two nephews: Ann Wright of Virginia Beach, Susan Rutz of Cornelius, North Carolina, Kathy Bates of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Sandra McEowen of San Rafael, California, Danny Richards of Salem, Virginia, and Fred Laughter of San Marcos, California. Angie's legacy of faith, courage and love are an inspiration to the ones she's left behind.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Angie's extraordinary caregivers: Cena Rosario, Lettie Poblete, Cetamae Rodil, Alicia Alonzo, Liza Lopez and Imelda Ferrante.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 pm, Saturday, September 11, 2010, in the Anchor Room at Atlantic Shores. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Angie's name to United Methodist Women http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/ or to your favorite charity. And as Angie often signed her letters: "Peace and joy!" H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.hdoliver.com.
