NORFOLK - Helen Caulfield Ballard Hoffman died peacefully March 6, 2010 at Harbors Edge in Norfolk. Born in Norfolk, on November 23, 1914, she brought joy to life and was loved as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, sister and aunt, friend, teacher, leader, and volunteer. She was known for her intelligence, compassion, interest in others, optimism, and beauty.

In the depth of the depression, with no expectation of going to college, Helen was awarded a scholarship to Westhampton College (now a part of the University of Richmond) where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, she taught English, French and history in the Norfolk Public Schools where she formed life-long friendships and influenced many.

Helen was predeceased by her first husband, William Pierce Ballard and by her second husband, Walter Edward Hoffman. She is survived by her children, Anne Ballard Shumadine, Elizabeth Libbey Lasher, and William Pierce Ballard, Jr.; her stepchildren, Carole Hoffman Hancock and Walter Edward Hoffman, Jr.; her long time friend and sister-in-law Mary Vellines, loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.

Helen was a member of Ghent United Methodist Church for 70 years. Her contributions to the community included presidency of the local American Association of University Women, director of the Old Dominion Concert Series, first woman appointed to the Board of the Norfolk Public Library, and chairman of The Hermitage Foundation Auxiliary Board. . In 1974, she was a recipient of the First Annual Award of the Westhampton College Alumnae Association. Her most lasting interest was Virginia Wesleyan College where she was a member of the Board of Trustees and the founder of Women of Wesleyan. In recognition of her service, Virginia Wesleyan College awarded her an honorary degree in 2003.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Amy Buesa, an angel of care who provided friendship and love to Helen for six years. Thanks also go to the staff at Harbors Edge who lovingly cared for her during the last two years of her life, and to the staff at Odyssey Health Care who provided support to Helen and her family during the last weeks of her life.

A celebration of Helens life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tues., March 9, 2010 in Ghent United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Helen Hoffman Endowed Scholarship at Virginia Wesleyan College, 1584 Wesleyan Dr., Norfolk, VA 23502 or to Ghent United Methodist Church, 531 Raleigh Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507.
