ROBERT H JOHNSON
Virginia Beach - Robert Hunter "Bob" Johnson, 92, died quietly at home on February 27, 2010. A lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, VA, he was born April 9, 1917, the son of Ella Land Johnson and Reaves Templeton Johnson. A devoted family man, he was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Bertha Spry Johnson, and his beloved and only child, Patricia Ann "Patsy" Johnson. He was also predeceased by his brother, Reeves E Johnson. Bob was a testimony to perseverance, having survived a fatal car & train wreck at four years of age. He continued to face life's challenges with a determined but quiet and gentle attitude. His humble and affable nature endeared him to all who knew him.
Most of his career was spent with the U.S. Naval Air Rework Facility, Norfolk, VA, as an engineer technician. He frequently traveled around the Country securing needed parts for aircraft and other equipment, retiring after 33 years of service. Afterwards he served as an Inspector for the City of Virginia Beach. A persistent tinkerer who could fix most any kind of electronics, he was also a serious collector of antiques and dolls, amassing quite a collection at one time. After his family, his greatest joys were constant reading and learning a broad range of interests to satisfy his inquisitive mind and he would often drive to the public library at a moment's notice to further research a phrase or chemical name he did not understand. His beautiful yard and garden where he spent countless hours working is still enjoyed by many.
Bob is survived and will be greatly missed by his niece, Layne Johnson Tarbutton and her husband Lloyd Tilghman "Til" Tarbutton of Naples, FI and VA Beach, VA, and his nephew Reeves Edward "Ed" Johnson, Jr. and his wife Diane McChesney Johnson of VA Beach, VA, as well as many other distant relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, March 5, 2010 at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, VA. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, PO Box 945, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 or to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hdoliver.com
