Ernest L. Johnson Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Ernest Linwood "Ernie" Johnson Jr., 86, of Birdneck Point, passed away April 12, 2009. A native of Ocean View in Norfolk, Mr. Johnson played football and baseball for Granby High School, graduating in 1942. He also participated in the Ocean View community boxing program. Mr. Johnson enlisted in the United States Navy and became a naval aviator. He served with Fighter Squadron Eight (VF-8) flying F6F Hellcats in the Pacific and then flew SB2C Helldivers with Bombing Squadron 3 (VB-3) at NAS Oceana. He served in the Naval Reserves with VF-861 and also was a member of the Association of Naval Aviators. Following World War II, Mr. Johnson attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary (ODU) and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1950 with a B.S. in accounting. He was an auditor for A. Lee Rawlings & Company and later the comptroller of Kline Chevrolet. Mr. Johnson joined the firm Frederick B. Hill & Company in 1957 shortly after passing the CPA exam and received Certificate number 919. Mr. Johnson became a senior partner and retired from the company in 1984 after 27 years. He continued to practice until 2007. He was a member of the Virginia Society and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Johnson was an avid golfer throughout his life; he was the 1987 Senior Club Champion at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club where he was a member. Mr. Johnson is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Georgia Frances Styron Johnson. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest L. Johnson Sr. and Sara Elizabeth Butt Johnson; and his brother, William J. Johnson. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth J. Harrison. Mr. Johnson leaves to remember him his sons, Ernest L. "Skip" Johnson III (Lauralee M. Grim) and William R. "Bill" Johnson (Dr. Margaret D. Johnson); his grandchildren, David S. Johnson (Katie W. Johnson), Crispin Cole Johnson (Angela G. Johnson), and Ashley Frances Johnson (fianc´┐Ż Jeffrey Bronco); and great-grandchildren, Camron C. Johnson, Maverick A. Johnson and Summer Bronco. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad or an organization of your choice.
